The 7 leaks I find in almost every brand audit
The 7 leaks I find in almost every brand audit
Every founder I work with thinks their problem is unique. And every brand is. The leaks usually aren't.
When I audit a brand, I go through the offer, the site, the funnel and the data, one layer at a time. After 13 years of building my own brands and walking through founders' businesses, the same 7 leaks show up in almost every one. They're quiet. They don't break anything. They cost you sales every single day.
Here's what they are, how to spot them, and what I fix first.
1. Your homepage leads with the product
Your homepage has about 5 seconds to answer 1 question: why should I care? Most homepages answer with the product. "New arrivals." "Shop the collection." "Handmade planners."
Buyers are buying a feeling, a result, a version of their life. Lead with that.
The fix: Rewrite your first screen so it names the outcome in under 10 words, then show the product as the way to get there. A jewelry brand sells "warm gold for sunlit days." A planner brand sells a calmer week.
2. Too many doors on the first screen
I see it constantly: 3 buttons in the hero, 6 links in the menu, a pop up, a quiz and a sale banner, all at once. Every option feels helpful. Together they tell your visitor you don't know where they should go either.
The fix: Pick 1 action for the first screen and make it obvious. Everything else can live further down the page.
3. Your bestsellers are sitting alone
This is the leak founders are most surprised by. In one audit, a founder's catalog already held her signature offer, spread across 6 separate products that buyers kept purchasing together. She had built it in pieces without seeing it.
When your best products only sell 1 at a time, your average order stays small, and every sale costs you the same to win.
The fix: Look at what people already buy together. Bundle it, name it, and price it so the full set is always the best deal. You're packaging what your customers are already telling you they want.
4. The freebie with nothing behind the door
A free guide that people download every day is a great start. When the last page of that guide is the end of the journey, it's a leak. I audited a founder whose freebie was bringing in new subscribers daily, and not one of them was being offered anything after.
The fix: Every lead magnet needs a next step. At minimum, build a 3 email welcome flow that delivers the freebie, tells your story and makes a clear offer. The people who opted in have already raised their hand.
5. A call to action that points nowhere
This one hides in plain sight. A button says "Shop the collection" and lands on a page that lists everything. An email promises "the next step" and links to the homepage. In one audit, a founder's freebie pointed buyers to a product she hadn't built yet.
The fix: Click every button on your site and in your emails once a month. Each one should land exactly where it promises.
6. Your ads and your pages are telling 2 different stories
Someone taps an ad about a specific product, look or problem, then lands on a general homepage and has to start over. That gap between the ad and the page is where most paid traffic quietly disappears.
The fix: Match every ad to a page that continues the same message: the same image, the same words, the same offer. When the page picks up exactly where the ad left off, the click turns into a sale.
7. Nobody is reading the numbers
Most founders I meet can tell me their revenue. Far fewer can tell me where it came from, which products bring repeat buyers, or which creative is actually driving sales. Without that, every decision is a guess, and growth stalls at the same number month after month.
The fix: Once a month, look at 3 things: where your sales came from, your best and worst selling products, and your email revenue. Then decide 1 thing to change. A monthly habit beats a yearly overhaul.
Where to start
You don't need to fix all 7 this week. Start with the leak closest to the sale: usually number 3 or number 4. Those are the quickest wins, and they build on products and traffic you already have.
If you read this list and saw your own brand in 3 or more of these, that's normal. It also means there's revenue sitting inside your business right now, waiting to be found.
